How to Remove Hardwood Vent Covers

Hardwood vent covers allow homeowners to protect the floor register from becoming clogged with foreign objects, while creating a seamless finished appearance. The vents are generally held in place by screws, wood glue or a combination of both. Wood putty is also often used to fill in any gaps between the vent cover and the flooring. Gather together the correct tools for the job before attempting to uninstall your hardwood vent cover.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the screws holding the hardwood vent cover in place with a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver. Avoid misplacing the screws by storing them inside a plastic baggie or container. If the hardwood vent isn’t held in place by screws, move on to the next step.

    • 2

Insert the end of a flat-head screwdriver between the hardwood vent and the floor. Carefully lift up the vent and hold it in place with your hand while you loosen the remaining three sides from the adhesive. Remove the vent cover and set it to the side.

    • 3

Examine the hole for any remaining wood glue or putty. If present, remove the remaining product with a piece of fine steel wool. Work the steel wool over the putty or glue to remove the bulk, paying attention to not scratch the flooring.

    • 4

Dampen a rag with denatured alcohol and use it to remove any remaining adhesive or putty residue.
