How to Remove Moisture From Acrylic Concrete Sealer

Acrylic concrete sealer can protect concrete surfaces from moisture penetration; but if the sealer is applied improperly or lacks the ability to fully block moisture, then moisture may become trapped beneath the coating. If not remedied, this can lead to the growth of an unpleasant, chalky film, usually white in color. Acrylic sealers are especially vulnerable to this problem because acrylic coatings can crack, which provides moisture with an entry point.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Apply heat to the area. Depending on how deeply the moisture has penetrated into the sealer, you may be able to evaporate the moisture without changing the properties of the sealer. You can apply direct heat with a space heater or a hair dryer.

    • 2

Pour a commercial solvent into an empty spray bottle and mist it carefully over the concrete, wherever the moisture has penetrated. Effective solvents include acetone, xylene and methyl ethyl ketone. Spray lightly to avoid soaking the concrete with the solvent.

    • 3

Use a paint roller to evenly distribute the solvent over the concrete. The solvent will temporarily soften the sealer to allow any moisture to evaporate. When the solvent dries, the sealer will re-harden naturally. If the moisture remains, you will need to strip the sealer and reseal the concrete.

    • 4

Apply a coat of acrylic sealer remover to the surface of the concrete and allow the chemicals to absorb the sealer for several minutes. Then use a high-powered spray nozzle from a pressure washer to blast away the remaining residue with warm water.

    • 5

Clean the concrete with mild soap and water and allow it to dry naturally before applying a new concrete sealer. Some sealers should be sprayed onto the concrete for best results while others should be rolled on. Read the directions carefully to determine the optimal application method. Only apply sealer after the concrete has dried completely.
