How to Remove Green Mold From Floor Joists

If green mold gets into your floor joists, you must remove it immediately or your house can quickly develop a mold problem that can only be resolved by professional mold removal. Since your floor joists are likely only exposed in the basement or crawl space of your home, these are the areas that you are most likely to notice a mold problem. You can access these areas yourself to clean out green mold. However, if you believe that you have mold in the interior floor joists of your home (for example, on the second level of a house) then you will have to hire a professional to resolve the issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a solution to treat the green mold. You should use ten parts water to one part white vinegar. You can use bleach in place of white vinegar if you wish.

    • 2

Spray the cleaning solution directly on the moldy area of the floor joists. If you have a full basement, then you will likely need a ladder to get close to the moldy area. If you have a crawl space then you can probably access the area without a ladder. Do not spray the area from far away or you may actually disperse some green mold spores rather than killing them.

Wipe the area down with a cleaning rag that has also been sprayed with the cleaning solution. Switch rags for each different location of the mold to prevent any remaining viable spores from spreading. Drop each used rag into the plastic bag as you finish with it.

Spray the area again. This time, you will let the mixture sit for 24 hours.

Repeat the spraying, wiping and spraying process every day for three days. After this, you can give the area a week before you repeat the process for another three days in a row. This should clean the green mold from the joists and prevent any surviving spores from repopulating the area.
