Interior Mold Treatment

Mold. Nobody wants it, but sometimes it seems to sneak in uninvited. It can ruin fabrics and wood. It can cause allergic reactions. It can cause bad smells in the home. Follow these simple instructions to send it on its way.
  1. Removing Moisture

    • Find any leaky or moist pipes. Dry them up and find the source of the water. Repair the problem.

    Cleaning Hard Surfaces

    • When cleaning, slightly wet the mold with a wet cloth to lessen the amount of airborne spores in the atmosphere. Scrub hard surfaces with a non-ammonia soap. Non-toxic, organic soap is best for the environment; vinegar is recommended.

    Cleaning Fabrics and Carpeting

    • Get rid of moldy carpeting and all moldy fabrics, some experts advise. Others insist that washing the washables (such as a plastic shower liner) in a vinegar bath, and regularly dusting carpets with baking soda, letting it sit for several hours, then vacuuming it up, will work to get rid of the mold.

    Other Porous Surfaces

    • Discard moldy drywall, wallpaper and boxes. Nothing can be done for them.

    Air

    • Change air filters regularly in heating and air-conditioning vents. Buy a good quality air purification system that uses both a HEPA filter and UV and negative ion technologies. Keep your home at around 69 73 degrees Fahrenheit and keep the humidity level at no higher than 54 percent. Keep fresh air moving in your home, as well as bright sunlight coming in through your windows.
