Patching Leaking Metal Water Pipes

Metal pipes are usually reliable, but they are susceptible to damage and can sometimes leak. Leaks can come from small holes caused by corrosion or major cracks. You do not need to cut into the pipe to repair it. Patching is a viable repair option and is a permanent fix. Patch kits do not cost a lot of money, are relatively simple to use and can be bought at your local hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the leak by feeling along the pipe for running water. Look in areas where there is a puddle on the floor below the pipe.

    • 2

Sand the area of the pipe around the leak using 400-grit sandpaper. Be sure to sand at least an inch around the leak, as well. This will roughen the pipe so the patch sticks well.

    • 3

Turn off the main water supply to the building by turning the lever to the right.

    • 4

Wet the pipe patch until it feels saturated but is not dripping water.

    • 5

Wrap the patch tightly around the leak in the pipe. Work quickly because the patch bonds fast once it gets wet. Be sure to make at least three complete wraps.

    • 6

Repeat Step 5, wrapping in the opposite direction.

    • 7

Apply pressure to the patch with your hands to secure it. Let the patch dry completely for 12 hours.

    • 8

Turn on the water supply to the building by turning the valve lever to the left.
