How to Remove Mold From Water Soaked Wood

Mold, which can grow on damp surfaces in 24 to 48 hours, will spread quickly in moist environments. But even extreme outbreaks of mold growth from roof leaks, flooding, high humidity and other water damage can be eliminated if you act promptly. Removing mold from small areas of water-soaked wood is easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Painter's mask
  • Fans, dehumidifier
  • Sponges and rags
  • Bucket of non-ammonia, pine oil-based detergent and hot water
  • Bucket of disinfectant chlorine bleach/water mixture (1 and 1/4 cup bleach for each gallon of water)

Instructions

    • 1

      Ventilate the area.

    • 2

Discard all porous materials, such as carpeting, bedding, rugs, drapes, furniture and clothing, affected by mold. Don't take chances with large items, including porous insulation materials inside affected walls, that cannot be properly disinfected.

    • 3

Allow all solid wood and non-porous items to dry before attempting to clean them. Apply detergent and hot water liberally, scrubbing all surfaces. Let the area dry thoroughly for several days before disinfecting.

    • 4

Disinfect surfaces with a 10 percent solution of bleach and water. Focus on one small area at a time, letting the bleach soak in for 10 minutes before rinsing with clear water. Move to the next area and repeat the process until all contaminated areas have been disinfected.

    • 5

Allow the area to dry for two or three days before rebuilding or returning household items. Continue checking problem spots periodically for moldy odors. Disinfect persistent spots with a 10 percent solution of bleach.
