Water Damage & Mold in Drywall

A broken pipe in your home can cause a huge mess and damage your belongings. It could also lead to water damage within your walls, which could lead to mold growth on the drywall.
  1. Mold Growth

    • Mold growth often follows waters damage to drywall because moisture and oxygen are all mold needs. The mold can grow on exposed drywall, or it can on the backside of drywall, hidden from view, according to North Carolina State University.

    Issues

    • If you have mold growing on your drywall as a result of water damage, then you and everyone else in your home is at risk for experiencing allergic reactions and other health issues associated with exposure to mold.

    Solution

    • After fixing the source of the water damage, thoroughly examine all the drywall that has been affected. You can wipe down the drywall with a solution of water and detergent to remove mold spores, then use fans to dry out the material quickly. Removing and replacing the drywall can reduce the risk of mold growth.
