Natural Treatments for Black Mold

Black mold, or stachybotrys chartarum, thrives in damp, warm areas like bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Inhaled black mold causes health issues that can--in worst-case scenarios--lead to death. This toxic mold is greenish-black and opportunistic. Make sure you remove all signs of the mold, and dispose of your cleaning materials responsibly. There are natural treatments to get rid of black mold.
  1. Dry the Moisture

    • Remove the moisture that feeds it. Check for leaking pipes, standing water, wet insulation, slow drains and any other source that will keep water available. Open shower curtains following a shower so water doesn't stick in the folds of plastic. Wipe down walls, counters and any other place where water pools.

    Silver and Tea Tree Oil

    • If your mold spots are not extensive and limited only to surfaces, clean the surrounding area with a mixture of colloidal silver and tea tree oil. Mix 10 drops essential tea tree oil with 2 oz. 16 parts-per-million colloidal silver and 16 oz. pure spring water. Shake vigorously before spraying or pouring a small amount on a cloth. Rub the area thoroughly until all of the spots are gone. Wipe the area with a dry cloth and leave. The tea tree and silver will not only kill the mold and spores, but it will also help to prevent its return.

    Mold on Shower Curtains

    • If you have an area outside your home where you can hang your shower curtain for cleaning, bundle it up so that all of the mold-contaminated areas are inside the bundle. Take it outside, and hang it in the sun before spraying your shower curtain with the colloidal silver and tea tree oil mixture. Leave the mixture on for 10 minutes before scrubbing the affected area. Rinse the cleaned area, and spray the shower curtain again with the mix. Leave it to dry in the sun before hanging it back in your bathroom.

    Removing the Mold

    • If you have drywall that is damp or has been exposed to an extended period of moisture, remove the drywall and replace it with new material. The mold is likely embedded in the drywall, and replacing it will be the most efficient and cost-effective method to remove the mold. Encapsulate the area before you begin removal of the building material. Cover air conditioning ducts, windows and doors with heavy gauge plastic and tape into place. Wear a HEPA and pollen-proof mask to prevent breathing in the mold. Cut away all of the affected area, and wrap the pieces in plastic. Clean any mold spots you see on studs and flooring with a mold-killing substance, like the silver colloidal and tea tree oil mix. Put up new drywall, and repaint or retile the area. Dispose of everything that has come in contact with the mold, and ventilate the room to the outside to prevent mold spores from contaminating the rest of the house.

    Bleach Water Solution

    • Mix 2 c. bleach with 112 oz. water to create a bleach solution. Put in a sprayer bottle and spray. Make sure not to drip on fabrics. Turn on a sun lamp, and allow the area to dry under the lamp.
