Decide if you want a battery or water-powered backup sump pump system.
Find a location for your backup sump pump.
Mount water-powered models on a joist over your main sump pump and connect to the municipal water supply. Install battery-powered models next to the main pump and hook up to the discharge piping.
Use plastic or copper piping to hook up the backup sump pump to the water supply.
Put in PVC suction pipe. This pipe runs to the bottom of your sump pit, allowing the entire pit to be emptied.
Hook up discharge pipe to the outside or to the primary discharge.
Power up the battery and hook it up to the discharge pipe.
