Do-It-Yourself Greenhouse

Growing your own plants isn't difficult when you make your own greenhouse structure. Using household materials, your homemade greenhouse can house an array of plants, whether you're interested in edibles or exotic ornamentals. Your homemade greenhouse doesn't have to be a permanent structure, so even apartment dwellers or others with small outdoor spaces can construct one for seasonal use.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a small-sized portable tent frame. This can be obtained from a garden supply shop, online or an outdoor supply vendor. The tent frame should be no taller than 6 feet and no wider than 9 feet. This is suitable for a small, portable greenhouse.

    • 2

Measure the outside dimensions of your tent frame to determine how many white sheets you will need. The standard measurement for a king-sized flat sheet is 108 by 102 inches. For a 6-by-9-foot tent frame, you will need two king-sized bedsheets.

    • 3

Drape one of the white sheets over the top of the tent frame, centered. Because a king-sized sheet is so large, it should drape almost entirely over the tent frame. Secure it in place by wrapping parts of the sheet around the framed part of the tent. Staple the fabric into place with the office stapler. This will hold the sheets adequately to the frame.

    • 4

Wrap the second white sheet around the framed structure halfway. Staple the fabric to itself around the framed parts. This creates a three-walled look with the sheet, leaving one entire section of the structure open.

    • 5

Pull the lightweight, small tent to the side of your home or an outbuilding.
