Measure the water level outside and inside the cellar. Begin draining when the water outside drops lower than the one inside to protect walls and floors from buckling.
Purchase or rent a sump pump to drain the water from the cellar. For lower water levels you can bail the water out with a pail, but a sump pump works most quickly.
Set up the sump pump according to the manufacturer's directions. If you lost electricity or the home's electrical panel is affected by flood waters, power the pump with a 12-volt car battery.
Pump or bail the water out of the cellar, stopping when the interior and exterior water levels equalize. Continue pumping as the exterior water level drops.
Shovel out any mud and silt on the floor and in crevices. Use a wet vac to clean up damp patches and smaller particles. Sweep and mop the floors with bleach afterward.
