How to Fix a Window Leak From an Ice Flow

Ice flows and dams can develop on your roof in the winter and can eventually lead to leaks in and around your window frame. Any leak in your home can cause wood rot as well as mold and mildew growth. Prevent the ice from developing in the first place by installing ice dam membranes around the window. Fix leaks that do occur by filling cracks on the window frame with caulk. Don’t make any repairs until the leak has stopped.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the end of the caulk with a pair of pliers and pull it off the window as well as the window frame. Continue until all of the caulk is gone. If the caulk is leaking in one area on the window, it is likely that other areas are also losing integrity. Removing and replacing all of the caulk will ensure the best seal.

    • 2

Dip a cloth into all-purpose cleaning solution and rub it over the window frame. Work until the area is as clean as you can make it but don’t soak the area, as this can push water into the cracks and cause more serious damage.

    • 3

Cut the tip off the caulk tube so the opening is ¼-inch wide. Place the tube into a caulking gun.

    • 4

Hold the caulk-gun nozzle at the base of one of the cracks around the window frame. Depress the trigger and slowly push the caulk along the crack. Lift your finger off the trigger when you’ve covered the crack.

    • 5

Cut the strip of wet caulk with a dull knife.

    • 6

Smooth the caulk with a paint scraper. If it is located in a corner on the wood frame, use a spoon.

    • 7

Let the caulk dry completely and repeat the process with the rest of the cracks around the window.
