How to Fill in Asphalt Holes

Asphalt is a common material used to finish streets, sidewalks and driveways. Though typically durable, asphalt will crack and become potted over time due to the freezing and expansion of water during the winter months. With a relatively new product -- asphalt cold patch -- homeowners can easily fill asphalt holes without having to mix together a hot mix of asphalt. The cold patch compound can even be applied in just 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Asphalt cold patch compound

Instructions

    • 1

Move a wheelbarrow next to the site where you need to repair the asphalt holes and fill the bucket with asphalt cold patch compound and the included additive. Follow the instructions on the side of the package carefully to incorporate the compound and additive in the proper ratio. Use a shovel to mix the material thoroughly.

    • 2

Scoop the asphalt cold patch into the holes in the asphalt surface. Fill the holes with enough compound so that it slightly overfills the holes.

    • 3

Immediately pack down the compound with a steel tamper. Hold the tamper level and continue packing the asphalt until it is even with the existing asphalt surface. Scoop more of the cold patch compound into the hole, if necessary, and pack further.
