Place small pieces of metal in a vise to hold them in place when making a hole with a drill.
Put on gloves and safety glasses for protection when drilling holes in metal.
Place the tip of a center punch on the metal in the location where the hole will be drilled. Strike the end of the punch to make an indentation on the metal surface. Use the indentation as a starting point for drilling.
Place a small diameter high speed drill bit in the chuck of a hand drill. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for attaching a bit. Use a drill bit that is at least half the size of the hole that you want to make.
Position the tip of the drill bit in the indentation. Apply downward pressure on the drill and start the drill. Place a drop of oil on the metal surface to help cool and lubricated the drill bit.
Drill completely through the metal surface with the smaller drill bit. Remove the smaller bit and replace it with a bit that is the size of the desired hole. Drill through the metal with the larger bit using the smaller hole as a guide. Apply a drop of oil periodically to aid in drilling the metal.
