Asphalt Sealcoating Preparation

Though asphalt is a widely used material, it can become filled with cracks and holes after taking years of abuse from wintry weather. Once water settles into the asphalt and expands and contracts, cracks and holes will form. Using a sealcoating procedure, you can resurface the asphalt and repair the damage. Before installing the sealcoating, there are a few steps you must take to ensure a proper and seamless application.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen the asphalt surface with a water using a hose. This allows the asphalt degreaser to spread evenly and easily during application.

    • 2

Fit a funnel into the opening of a pump sprayer and add asphalt degreaser to the tank of the pump.

    • 3

Fasten the cover on the top of the pump sprayer and then hold the tip of the sprayer 3 to 4 inches away from the asphalt and spread the degreaser.

    • 4

Wait 12 to 15 minutes for the degreaser to work on oil stains that may be ingrained in the asphalt and then scrub down the surface with a plastic push brush. Pay particular attention to spots that have been clearly stained.

    • 5

Spray down the asphalt with water from a hose to clean off the degreaser.

    • 6

Wait a few hours for the asphalt to dry and then fit a tube of asphalt crack filler into a caulking gun and fill any cracks that are wider than 1/4 inch. Hold the end of the caulking tube at a 45-degree angle to crack and draw the tip down along the length of the crack as you release the filler. Spread the filler with putty knife and keep it level with the surrounding asphalt. Dry the filler for 2 to 3 hours, then begin the sealcoating process.
