Vinyl Versus HardiePlank

Whether you are building a new home or replacing the exterior of an old one, one of the biggest choices you will need to make is what type of siding you will use. Siding is an important part of the home as it protects the interior from damage from the weather. Vinyl siding is a type of plastic, whereas HardiePlank is a brand name type of concrete siding. When choosing a type of siding, research the pros and cons of each type in order to make the best decision.
  1. HardiePlank Siding

    • HardiePlank, the official name and product, is often mistakenly referred to by other names such as Hardy Board, Hardi Plank and Hardie Board; among other spelling variations. Products with these other names are typically copycat knockoffs of the official HardiePlank product. HardiePlank's concrete material can be molded into lap siding, shingle siding, vertical siding and the trim work for around windows and doors on the exterior of the home.

    Vinyl Siding

    • Much like HardiePlank, vinyl siding can be molded to create a certain look. However, unlike HardiePlank, "vinyl" simply refers to the type of plastic used to make the siding. It is not a name brand. Most vinyl siding is made from PVC, or polyvinyl chloride; though some vinyl sidings may be made from a different type of plastic.

    Similarities

    • One of the biggest advantages to HardiePlank is that it is made out of concrete and therefore, termites and other pests cannot eat through it. Similarly, vinyl siding is a plastic and therefore is impervious to insect damage. Both products are resistant against rotting and mold or mildew penetration. HardiePlank and vinyl siding can be painted any desired colored and both can be molded to create siding that matches any home architecture style.

    Differences

    • When HardiePlank is cut, silica dust is released which can be dangerous when inhaled. Also, because it is concrete, it is heavier than vinyl and adds significant weight to structures. Though vinyl siding cannot be penetrated by mildew, mildew can grow over the outside of it, while HardiePlank remains mildew-resistant. Lastly, though it is plastic, used vinyl siding is not currently recyclable as of 2011. HardiePlank also is not recyclable but many versions of the siding contain recycled materials and are more durable than vinyl.
