How to Use Sand to Clear Up Mud

Mud, a combination of clay, silt, soil and other ingredients, mixed with water, is one of the world's most important building materials, according to Claude Monty, a member of the International Association of Sedimentologists. However, mud is very unsightly and potentially troublesome when in a place where it shouldn't be, such as a road, a drive or your back yard. Luckily, you can use a neat trick with sand to make the mud easier to clean up.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy or otherwise obtain a bag of sharp sand, as its grittier constituency is more conducive to absorbing the water present in mud.

    • 2

Cut off a corner of the bag so as to form a pouring spout.

    • 3

Pour the sand directly onto the mud from the bag, covering the mud completely. Allow the sand to soak up the water in the mud, thereby creating a semi-dried mud-sand mixture. Sharp sand absorbs about 20 percent of its weight in water.

    • 4

Scoop up the semi-dried mud-sand mixture with a spade and place it in a suitable carrying container, such as a bucket.

    • 5

Dispose of the material ethically, taking care to observe local rubbish disposal regulations.
