How Can Holes in Metal Siding Be Filled?

Although metal siding is generally substantially durable, dents and other damage can occasionally occur. Older siding, particularly tin siding and some aluminum siding, is particularly susceptible to holes due to corrosion. Moisture exposure causes uncoated or scratched siding to develop corrosion, which begins as dark spots on the siding. These dark corrosion spots gradually deteriorate metal siding until holes form. Filling existing holes in metal siding is necessary to prevent corrosion from proliferating and causing additional damage. Fortunately, homeowners can fill in holes in metal siding using basic techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the damaged siding before patching it. Begin by mixing a sudsy solution of two drops of dish soap in 1 qt. of warm water. Combine the sudsy cleaning solution in a bucket.

    • 2

Dip a nylon scrubbing sponge in the sudsy cleaning solution. Scrub the soapy sponge over the damaged siding to detach any grime.

    • 3

Rinse the sudsy siding panel with fresh water. Let the panel thoroughly air-dry.

    • 4

Apply anti-rust primer to the exposed metal edges of the hole to prevent the aluminum from corroding. Brush the coat of primer evenly over the exposed metal. Let the primer dry overnight.

    • 5

Mix the components of two-part auto body filler according to manufacturer's instructions. Once the filler is evenly combined, spread it evenly over the hole using a putty knife. Use the putty knife to firmly pack the auto body filler into the hole.

    • 6

Scrape the excess filler off the panel's surface using the putty knife. Let the auto body filler dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Sand the excess filler off the panel using 120-grit sandpaper. Thoroughly smoothen the patched hole.

    • 8

Coat the patched panel with a shade of acrylic latex house paint matching the existing paint on the surrounding siding panels. Apply the coat of acrylic latex paint evenly with a clean paintbrush. Let the paint air-dry on the siding.
