How to Keep Smoke Out of Soffits

Soffits are located under the eaves of a house. They help allow air to circulate in and out of the attic. Vented soffit is installed along with solid soffit to give your attic the ability to breathe. Often times, smoke may get into the attic. This can come from your chimney or in some other manner, but when it does, it is always best to have a way to get the smoke out of the soffit. One way to do that is to install a soffit vent on the roof of your house.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the location in your attic where you will be installing the soffit vents. Pick a location between two rafters and drill a hole straight through the center of the location with a power drill. Poke a coat hanger through the predrilled hole and into the soffit under the eaves of the house.

Measure the size of the vent you will be installing and make a template on a piece of cardboard that is one inch smaller than the size of the vent. Set the template between the rafters in the house and outline it with a pencil.

    • 3

Cut along the pencil line with a drywall jab saw. Move the saw carefully along the line until it is completely cut out. Move to the outside of the house where the soffit vent will be installed and mark the same location with the template. Cut it out along the pencil line with a reciprocating saw.

Line the vent up to the opening you just cut and hammer one galvanized roofing nail into each corner of the vent and into the house. Repeat the process for other soffit vents for added ventilation to get the smoke out of your soffits.
