How to Replace a Nylon Screen With Aluminum

Regular window screening material typically cannot hold up to animals such as cats or dogs if they scratch at the window. This creates small holes in the screen that can let in insects. You can use aluminum window screening material instead to increase durability and reduce the risks of rips or tears appearing in window or door screens. Aluminum screening material is typically available at most hardware or home and garden stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old screen. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up the rubber screen protector inside the window frame. Pull this up gently and remove the screen from the window.

    • 2

Measure out the aluminum screening material. Lay the aluminum screening over the window frame. You will be trimming later so this does not need to be an exact measurement. Leave yourself plenty of screening material on all sides of the frame -- at least 6 inches for every side. Trim off this section from the rest of the roll of the screening material.

    • 3

Line up one corner of the screening material. Again, leave plenty of screening material on the edge. Place the end of the rubber protection strip in this corner and press it in with your flathead screwdriver.

    • 4

Roll in the protective rubber strip. Use a screening roller tool to press this rubber strip into the frame. Work slowly and take care not to let the tool stray onto the screening material as it may cut it. Do one side, turn the window and do the next side, repeating until all four sides are complete.

    • 5

Trim off the remaining screen material. Using an exacto knife, carefully trim away the excess aluminum screening from the frame. Again, work slowly and make sure you do not cut the protective rubber strip.
