How to Install Eavestroughing

Eavestroughing can degrade and develop leaks over time and may need to be replaced on older buildings. New buildings should also be fitted with eavestroughing to help divert water away from the foundation and help prevent leaks or flooding. An eavestrough, commonly known as a gutter, is made from a variety of materials. It comes in different designs but is usually installed with common methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the sections of roof where the eavestrough will be installed. Measure the length from end to end, as well as from the roof corners to the ground where the downspouts will be installed. Determine how many sections of eavestrough you will require by dividing the length of the roof by the available length of the sections.

    • 2

Cut and lay out the lengths of eavestrough in front of the building on the ground and connect as many pieces as you need for the length of roof. Insert connectors, end caps and downspout elbows prior to attaching the entire length of eavestroughing to the roof.

    • 3

Squeeze silicone in between any joints prior to attaching them and around the end caps to prevent water leakage.

    • 4

Mark the center point of the roof edge with chalk immediately below the bottom edge of the tiles or shingles, at the top of the fascia board. From this center point, run a chalk line along this edge to one end. At the end, lower the chalk line one inch from the top of the fascia and snap the line. This chalk line will be your guide for the top edge of the eavestrough when you secure it to the fascia. It will give the eavestrough a slight slope from the center of the roof to the end to allow the water to drain completely. Repeat from the center to the other end of the eavestrough.

    • 5

Place a hanger inside the eavestrough channel every 24 inches, at minimum. Different hanger manufacturers will have different methods of installing these but most will clip in under the front lip.

    • 6

Hoist the entire length of eavestrough up to the edge of the roof with one person at either end. Screw the eavestrough to the building's fascia board along the chalk line.

    • 7

Insert the downspouts into the downspout elbows and secure the downspouts to the building's exterior wall with screws.
