How to Use the Triplett 2202 EL Meter

When you are doing repairs on your home or working as an electrician, knowing how much power a specific circuit has can help you diagnose problems and fix them. The Triplett 2202 electric meter is a model of digital multimeter that you can use to quickly determine the voltage of a circuit. To use this specific model, you must have access to test leads of a circuit and connect them to the proper inputs on the device.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the red or positive test lead from the circuit you wish to test into the "VA" jack on the right side of the instrument. Connect the black or negative test lead from the same circuit to the "Com" jack located to the left of the "VA" jack. Do not place these leads in any other port as this could lead to electric shock or damage the unit.

    • 2

Place the "AC/DC" switch near the top of the instrument to the appropriate setting for the type of circuit you are testing. Alternating current (AC), is generally used in electrical systems that power your home or office building, while direct current (DC), is used in electrical systems that use battery power such as a vehicle.

    • 3

Turn the "Voltage Selector" dial to the appropriate range for the circuit that you are testing. If you are unsure of the range that the circuit is in, place the "Voltage Selector" at the highest setting and wait for a reading. If you receive an error message, move down to the next lowest setting until you get a reading.

    • 4

Wait for the meter to measure the voltage of the circuit. When it does, you will see this measurement appear on the screen. The reading will remain on the screen for several seconds. The unit will discharge the leads and the reading will disappear, indicating it is safe to remove the leads from the unit.
