How to Install an Aerial Lashing Kit to a Chimney

The chimney has long been the place to anchor an antenna for optimum broadcast reception. The chimney is always the highest point of a home, which makes it an obvious choice for mounting the necessary hardware for the antenna. An aerial lashing kit secures antennas to chimneys without the need for drilling into brick or mortar. Once on the roof, you can install your own aerial lashing kit without the need of special tools or skills, in 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a J-bolt and an eye-bolt from the lashing kit into opposite holes of the aerial bracket.

    • 2

Attach a nut to the end of the J-bolt and the eye-bolt. Turn the nuts just a few turns so that a maximum amount of tightening will be possible when the lashing wire is installed.

    • 3

Wrap two turns of lashing wire through the loop of the eye-bolt. Pull enough wire through to wrap the wire around itself no less than six times. Cut off any excess using wire cutters.

    • 4

Hold the aerial support bracket on one corner of the chimney below the top three courses of the chimney bricks. Pass the lashing wire attached to the eye bolt to your helper.

    • 5

Loop the free end of the wire around the J-bolt in the bracket and pull it tight. Wrap the wire around the hook of the J-bolt twice and around itself no less than six times. Cut off the excess with the wire cutters.

    • 6

Slide the three support brackets in place between the lashing wire and the chimney at each remaining corner. The brackets must bridge the mortar joint below the top three courses of brick. Be sure the lug on each corner bracket is positioned to support the lashing wire.

    • 7

Check the horizontal alignment of the lashing wire with the chimney brick mortar line.

    • 8

Tighten the nuts on the J-bolt and the eyebolt equally to firmly secure the bracket against the corner of the chimney. Tighten the nuts clockwise with an adjustable wrench.
