How to Mount Anchors in Brick

Attaching light- to medium-weight objects to bricks is easy with the right tools and fasteners. Bricks are brittle and likely to split and break apart if they are hammered on or subjected to too much pressure. Expansion sleeves that fit inside a hole in the brick and then expand when a bolt is pushed into them may force a crack in the brick that will eventually grow wider. A simple masonry screw has less potential for problems.

Things You'll Need

  • Anchor
  • Concrete screw
  • Electric drill
  • Carbide drill bit the same diameter as the screw
  • Marking pen
  • Masking tape
  • Safety goggles
  • Compressed air
  • Low-strength thread locking adhesive

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the anchors to the brick in the proper position. Mark where the screws will go to hold the anchor to the brick. Remove the anchor.

    • 2

Drill a hole into the brick with the drill bit, holding it steady. Use goggles to protect your eyes from the flying dust.

    • 3

Clean the hole out with a blast from a compressed air can.

    • 4

Spray the screw with the thread locking adhesive, which will prevent the screw from backing out because of vibrations.

    • 5

Hold the anchor to the wall and screw the drill into the hole, attaching the anchor until the screw is removed.
