How to Care for Exterior Mahogany

Mahogany is a strong, durable, expensive wood that gives your house a look of elegance. If you want the mahogany on the outside of your home to look good for years, you need to take care of it properly so it will maintain a healthy hardness and strong color. Caring for mahogany every spring is a wise decision, particularly if the wood is a deck or comparable high-traffic area.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the surface of the mahogany to collect dust and debris. Combine 1/4 cup TSP with water in a 1-gallon bucket.

    • 2

Dip a mop into the water, and swab the mahogany. Allow it to fully dry for two days.

    • 3

Attach 100-grit sandpaper to an electric sander, and sand the surface of the mahogany to smooth out any splinters and remove any caked-on debris. Vacuum the surface again.

    • 4

Dip a paint roller or 3-inch nylon brush into a waterproof, UV-resistant sealer. Test it on an inconspicuous area of the wood to ensure it doesn't react negatively with the mahogany.

    • 5

Apply a light coat of sealer to the surface of the mahogany. Allow it to cure for 24 hours. Repeat with a second coat.
