How to Use a Deck Sprayer

A deck sprayer, also known as a pump sprayer or garden sprayer, is a handy tool for spreading liquids for a variety of projects. A deck sprayer is especially useful when re-staining or protecting a deck with a waterproof sealant. Additionally, you can use a deck sprayer to apply a cleaning solution before the application of stain or sealant. Even those completely inexperienced with deck sprayers can learn to use one easily in under 30 minutes.

    • 1

Place the deck sprayer on a level surface and remove the screw cap on the top of the plastic reservoir.

    • 2

Insert a funnel into the opening of the sprayer.

    • 3

Protect your hands with a pair of rubber gloves and your eyes with safety goggles.

    • 4

Pour the liquid into the opening of the deck sprayer. Do not overfill the sprayer. The recommended fill line will be indicated on the side of the plastic reservoir.

    • 5

Remove the funnel from the opening of the sprayer and screw the cap securely on the opening.

    • 6

Consult the instruction manual for your deck sprayer and determine the appropriate number of pumps required to maintain pressure inside the tank. Once you have determined a safe number of pumps, lift the handle on the top of the sprayer and pump it up and down as recommended.

    • 7

Push the handle down and lock it into place by turning it clockwise once you have finished pumping.

    • 8

Grab the deck sprayer with one hand to carry it and hold the deck sprayer's wand in the other hand. Hold the tip of the wand 5 to 6 inches away from your intended target and squeeze the end of the wand to spray. Pump when necessary to restore pressure inside the reservoir.
