How to Remove Exterior Paint From Weather Stripping

Weather stripping consists of long, thin strips and is applied around windows and doors to seal tiny cracks and cervices that allow exterior air to seep inside. It is made of a variety of materials, including foam, vinyl and sometimes metal. Weather stripping should never be painted because the paint deteriorates all but metal weather strips. If you have accidentally painted your weather stripping, remove it immediately before the paint begins to interfere with the performance of the material.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of water and 1 to 2 tbsp. of a household cleaner. Stir the mixture well.

    • 2

Insert a nonabrasive sponge into the cleaning mixture and wring it out to remove excess water.

    • 3

Open the door or window where the painted weather stripping is installed. Scrub the weather stripping with firm pressure to soften the paint until it begins to flake off.

    • 4

Rinse the sponge in the bucket and repeat the process until all of the paint is gone.

    • 5

Empty the bucket and refill it with clean, cool water. Rinse the sponge well and soak it in the clean water.

    • 6

Wipe all areas of the weather stripping with the clean water to remove all cleaning residue.

    • 7

Dry the weather stripping with a clean towel until no more moisture is visible. Leave the window or door open for five to 10 minutes to allow additional moisture to evaporate.
