How Do I Kill Lichens on a Wood Deck?

Lichen is a combination of fungus and algae that thrives in moist areas. Lichen are commonly found growing with moss on exterior wooden decks. Though unappealing, lichen are not especially harmful and can be killed quite easily with a homemade solution. Properly applied, the solution will fully remove the lichen on your deck within a day of application.

  • Dropcloths
  • Push broom
  • Garden hose
  • Deck sprayer
  • Bleach
  • Water

      Cover surrounding plants with dropcloths to protect them against the solution.

      Sweep loose debris off the deck with the push broom, then spray down the deck with the garden hose. Moisture will help to evenly spread the lichen-killing solution.

      Fill a deck sprayer with equal parts of bleach and water and secure the screw cap firmly. Pump the deck sprayer as directed in the user's manual.

      Hold the wand of the deck sprayer 6 to 8 inches away from the wooden surface and spray the bleach and water solution onto the deck. After the solution has settled for 30 minutes, rub down the deck with a nylon-bristled brush to remove the lichen.

      Spray down the deck again with the garden hose to remove residue and debris.
