Set up a step ladder next to the gutter for one story homes and buildings. Use an extension ladder to access gutters on the second story; place extension ladders against the drain.
Climb the ladder with one bucket to empty the debris into, and the other holding your tools. Hang each bucket on the edges of the ladder.
Put latex, vinyl or leather gloves on your hands, and use a hand-sized trowel in one bucket to scoop the debris out with. Scoop additional debris out of the gutter with your hands, and empty it into the bucket.
Climb down the ladder and move the ladder over to access another portion of the gutter. Continue to to scoop out the debris, moving the ladder over as you travel around the house.
Insert the tip of the hose into the downspout and spray inside to unclog or clear out any debris. Tap the downspout with your hands to loosen any stubborn debris. Then continue to spray inside the downspout until it is all clear.
Climb the ladder once the gutters are completely dry. Bring up gutter sealant and touch up paint. Place the tip of the dispenser on top of the seams in the gutter's joints and run the sealant along the joints to prevent or repair any leaks.
Touch up any worn spots on the gutter with touch paint.
