How to Fix a Door Wall That Is Off Track

Door walls often lead to the backyard or patio in a home, right where children congregate most of the day. These sliding glass doors get a lot of hard use, with kids slamming them as they go in and out, morning until night. This wear and tear will sometimes cause a door wall to go out of its track, leaving you with a crooked door that's difficult or impossible to close. Fixing your door wall can be a quick procedure with just a few basic tools.

Instructions

Slide the door so that it is halfway open if you can move it at all. Lift up the door until the bottom of it is above the rim of the track at the base. If you have a bottom-supported door, pull the bottom half of the door outward slightly then slide it out of the track on top. Set the door aside. For top-supported doors, look for notches in the rollers and align them before lifting the door out.

Inspect the rollers for your door. Check the screws that hold them in. If the screws are loose, tighten them. This will fix the problem in most cases. If the roller is broken, unscrew it completely and remove it. Take it to the hardware store to buy an exact match. Replace the broken roller with a new one.

Check the track itself to find out if it's bent. If you see any dented portions on the track wall, insert a wood block between the two sides of the track. Hammer the metal back into place by hitting the aluminum toward the wood block on each side.

Slide the top of the door into the upper track, lift up on the door then slide the bottom edge of the door back into the bottom track. The door should slide easily back and forth.
