How to Repaint a Fireplace Cap

A fireplace cap, or chimney cap, is more than a decorative element. It protects your chimney's interior from rain and other inclement weather, curious animals and damage from strong wind. In addition, it slows the loss of air through the top of your chimney, keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Fireplace caps are typically composed of metal, which can take a beating when exposed to the elements. Repaint your fireplace cap to make it look new again.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with a clean fireplace cap. If your chimney was recently swept, there may be soot, dust or other debris on your fireplace cap. Clean the metal cap well with a rag soaked in plain white vinegar.

    • 2

Apply a coat of metal primer all over the cap. You can use a spray-on type of primer or paint on a traditional formula using a paintbrush. Let the primer dry completely, 4 to 6 hours.

    • 3

Paint the fireplace cap using a heat-resistant metal paint meant for outdoor use. As with the primer, you have your choice of spray-on or brush-on paints. Apply this first layer of paint evenly, covering all outer areas of the cap.

Let the paint dry 3 to 4 hours and apply a second coat. Be careful not to apply so much paint that it drips. Allow the cap to dry 24 to 48 hours before using your fireplace.
