How to Fix a Gutter Helmet With Ice Dam Problems

Gutter Helmet was invented in the 1981 when the founder of the company wanted to solve the problem of clogged gutters. His solution was a solid covering over the gutter that allowed water into the eave-troughs while leaves and dirt are pushed over the edge. One problem with this system is the ice damming that occurs at the leading edge of Gutter Helmet, preventing water from making it into the gutter; this also damages the shingles when the ice backed up under them. Fixing this problem is done with strategically placed heating cables.

Things You'll Need

  • Two gutter heating cables; self regulating
  • Aluminum tape

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the Gutter Helmet from the eave-trough by folding up the tabs and pulling it upwards with your hands. Be careful not to damage the material when removing it.

    • 2

Run one of the heating cables in the bottom front of the gutter, starting at the furthest point from the downspout. Secure the cable to the bottom front of the gutter with aluminum tape every 3 to 4 feet.

    • 3

Insert this cable into the downspout and push it until it comes out the bottom. Run the remaining cable to the nearest outlet.

    • 4

Run the second heating cable along the top of the mounting brackets for the Gutter Helmet. The cable should be secured to the very end of the brackets with a small amount of aluminum tape. When the Gutter Helmet is reinstalled the pressure helps to hold the cable in place.

Insert this cable into the downspout and push it until it comes out the bottom. Run the remaining cable to the nearest outlet.

Reinstall the Gutter helmet reversing the process used to remove it. Plug the heating cables into the exterior wall outlet.
