How to Remove Tanning Oil Stain From Brick

It's pleasant to recline on a patio chair on a hot summer day, slathered with tanning oil, soaking up the rays. It's not so nice to find your bottle of tanning oil has spilled on your brick patio. Like any other oil, tanning oil is a tricky substance to remove from the absorbent surface of bricks, and if not removed promptly and properly, leaves an unsightly stain. The key to removing tanning oil from your brick patio is to get to it as soon as the mishap occurs, to prevent a permanent discoloration.

Instructions

    • 1

Absorb as much of the spill as possible. Sprinkle the oil with a thick layer of absorbent, clay-based cat litter or newspaper. Use a generous amount to cover the entire stain. Allow the stain to sit covered for several hours or overnight.

    • 2

Sweep the stained area to remove cat litter or newspaper. Dispose of the used litter or newspaper in the trash to avoid creating new stains.

    • 3

Clean the stained brick with pressurized water. Attach a power sprayer to your garden hose. Adjust the sprayer to a thin, hard stream of water. Spray the area of brick that is stained, moving from the side closest to any buildings toward landscaped areas.

    • 4

Put on the rubber gloves. Add 1 lb. of TSP to the bucket. Slowly fill the bucket with one gallon of warm water. Mix well, using the scrub brush to stir the mixture.

    • 5

Apply the mixture to the stained area of brick. Cover the area affected and at least 1 inch wider on all sides with the mixture. Use the scrub brush to clean the surface of the bricks, paying attention to the mortared areas between the bricks. Allow the TSP solution to remain on the bricks until dry.

    • 6

Spray off the cleaned area of brick with the sprayer attachment. Continue to spray and rinse the area until no trace of TSP remains. Blot the area with rags or towels and allow to dry.
