How to Reseal Driveway Pavement

Driveway pavement, also known as asphalt, is a durable driveway material. It can show some wear after several years of use and exposure to the elements, however. The original sealer applied to the driveway upon installation may wear off and need replacement. You can reseal your driveway yourself, but you should wait for a series of three to four dry days before doing the project so the sealer has time to cure.

Instructions

  Turn the containers of asphalt pavement sealer upside down so the color can mix while you prepare the driveway for resealing. Set the containers in a cool spot.

  Spray any oil spots with asphalt cleaner. Scrub the stains with a scrub brush until the oil is lifted out of the concrete. Rinse the entire driveway with a garden hose fitted with a nozzle, starting at the top of the driveway.

  Let the driveway dry for 24 hours. Fill in any cracks with asphalt crack filler. For larger cracks, tamp the crack filler down with a trowel so it doesn't settle during sealing.

  Turn the containers of sealer right-side up and open them. Dip a paintbrush into the sealer and paint the edges of the driveway. Do not get any sealer on the plants or house.

  Pour a line of sealer onto the top of the driveway. Smooth it over the pavement with an asphalt driveway squeegee, spreading it in even, overlapping strokes that are parallel to the house.

  Continue pouring out the sealer and spreading it in lines parallel to the house, until you reach the bottom of the driveway. Let the sealer dry according to the package directions.

  Apply a second coat of the sealer, spreading the liquid in overlapping lines perpendicular to the house. Let the sealer dry for 48 hours before driving on it.
