How to Highlight Sidewalk Transitions

Uneven sidewalks that transition from one level to another can present a trip hazard, especially for small children and seniors. Whether the transition is due to damage or is the normal condition for the sidewalk, it can pose the same danger. Leaving a dangerous sidewalk transition unmarked can lead to an expensive lawsuit. You can highlight a sidewalk transition by following a step-by-step procedure that requires little expense and effort and will increase the safety for those that use it.

Broom
Putty knife
Painter's tape
Parking lot stripping paint
2-inch paintbrush

Instructions

  Clear away dirt and debris from the transition area using a broom. Remove stuck on debris, such as chewing gum, using a putty knife.

  Place painter's tape along the top of the transition about 2 inches from the edge and parallel to it. Place tape along the back edge of the lower part of sidewalk at the bottom of the step formed by the transition.

  Paint a stripe along the top of the transition between the tape and the edge of the sidewalk. Use parking lot stripping paint to highlight the transition. Paint the vertical part of the transition. Allow the paint to dry for several hours before removing the tape and continuing normal use.
