How to Paint Concrete Walkways With Non-Slip Coatings

Many walkways become slippery after rainfall or dew accumulation. Slipping on walkways can result in injury, and if a guest slips on your property, he can hold you responsible for medical bills. Apply a non-slip coating to your concrete walkway to help prevent this. Before applying a non-slip coating, you should clean the walkway to remove all dirt and any grime that could prevent the product's grit from adhering to the concrete.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the concrete walkway with detergent to remove dirt and stains. Concrete detergent is available at home improvement stores. Allow it to saturate the area for 15 to 20 minutes, or according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Scrub the detergent with a utility broom.

    • 3

Spray the concrete walkway down with a garden hose or power washer to remove all dirt and debris.

    • 4

Allow the concrete walkway to dry thoroughly.

    • 5

Mix the appropriate amount of non-slip grit into the sealant in a bucket according to the manufacturer's instructions. Typically, you must mix 1 lb. of grit to 5 gallons of water. Mix the grit with the water using a mixing stick.

    • 6

Pour the non-slip mixture into a paint tray.

    • 7

Apply the non-slip mixture on the walkway with a long-handled paint roller. Apply the coating onto the surface in small, 3-foot sections. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the mixture to dry, or consult manufacturer's instructions.
