How to Repair the Stair Step Cracks in a Stucco

The proper repair of cracks in stucco leaves a wall looking new again. With weather, time or percussion incidents, stucco may crack in a stair step pattern. Leaving the cracks in disrepair can lead to more cracks and eventually bare spots on the wall. While prevention of the original cracks may not be possible, stopping the further deterioration of the stucco is.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the stucco in the cracked area. Use a chisel and hammer to remove the stucco on the wall. Begin at the highest crack and work downward. Chisel away a square area to encompass all the cracks. Wipe away the dust and debris. Do not damage or remove the tar paper under the stucco.

    • 2

Cut tar paper about 4-inches wider and 4-inches longer than the cut out square.

    • 3

Slide the tar paper under the edges of the existing tar paper or under the edge of the old stucco. Use a staple gun and heavy staples to hold in place.

    • 4

Cut chicken wire to fit the hole. Place the cut wire into the opening and nail in place with galvanized "U" shaped nails. Place nails in an "X" shape on the wire and around the edges.

    • 5

Sponge the edges of the old stucco with water to soften. This will assist in blending the old stucco with the new.

    • 6

Mix the new stucco according to the manufacturer's directions and apply a thin layer to just cover the chicken wire. Allow to dry.

    • 7

Apply a second layer of stucco to fill in and match the old stucco. A third layer may be necessary depending on the type of existing finish.
