How to Align a Screen Door

Screen doors let cooling breezes flow through your home while keeping out bugs and other unwanted guests. It's important that your screen door fit snugly in your door frame and open and close easily. Proper alignment of the screen door is essential in ensuring this. If your screen door isn't closing properly, take a few moments and use this method to make sure your screen door is aligned properly.

  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • 1/8-inch drill bit
  • Wood screws

      Loosen and remove the screws from the top hinge of the door, on the side of the hinge that's attached to the frame. Have another person hold the door while you do this.

      Loosen the screws on the bottom hinge, on the side of the hinge that's attached to the door frame.

      Place a level against the inside edge of the door and move the door until it's plumb. Mark the location of the top hinge's screw holes onto the door frame with a pencil.

      Drill holes in the marked locations with a drill and a 1/8-inch bit.

      Line up the hinge holes with the holes in the frame. Insert wood screws into the holes and tighten them. Tighten the screw holes on the bottom hinge. The door should swing freely.
