Remove any loose stones, dirt and debris from the area with a wire brush and chisel. Sweep the area clean with a broom.
Coat the crack or hole with a layer of cement adhesive. This will help the patch adhere to the original cement better.
Build a form from scrap pieces of wood to hold the repair in place, such as for cracked step edges. Use bricks to hold the wood piece in place. Coat the wood with a mold release agent to prevent the cement from sticking to the wood. Make sure the top edge of the wood aligns with the top edge of the step.
Mix patching mortar with water to create a thick paste that has the consistency of peanut butter. Patch the crack or hole with the mixture, smoothing it out with a trowel.
Allow the cement to cure for 48 hours, wetting the patched area every six to 12 hours to prevent surface cracks. Remove the forms when the cement has fully cured.
