How to Fix Cracked Outside Stucco

Stucco has a distinct look that adds texture and design to a structure. The whole reason for having stucco on the outside is for aesthetic appeal, and that advantage is lost when your stucco has cracks in it. The downside of stucco is that it is susceptible to cracking. When this happens, you need to take immediate action so the crack does not continue to spread. Repairing a fresh crack in stucco is a quick and simple patch job; the task becomes more difficult when a crack gets too big and chunks start to fall out of place.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a 5-in-1 painter's tool scraper to remove all loose debris from the stucco area. Leaving fragile pieces for the new stucco to bond to puts the new stucco at risk of falling apart with the loose stucco.

    • 2

Mix the new stucco with water in a 5-gallon bucket according to the directions listed on the label of the stucco package. Since stucco dries quickly, it's a good idea to mix only enough patch material for a 15 to 20 minute application.

Apply 1/4 of an inch of stucco at a time into the cracks. Use a rubber float to smooth out the area of application and remove any excess stucco. For smaller patches, fill the area with paintable high-quality caulk, then let it dry and top with stucco.
