How to Harden Spalling Brick

The term "spalling" refers to the cracking and crumbling of bricks after they have experienced an intake of water, which has expanded when frozen, leaving cracks and instability in the brick structure. This problem is common to many homeowners with brick components on their houses. While most masonry experts suggest replacing spalling bricks for the best results, some careful cleaning and sealing can help harden and stabilize the bricks.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the spalling brick to remove any growing mold or dirt. Mix together 1 ounce of laundry detergent, 1 quart of laundry bleach and about 3 quarts of warm water together in a bucket.

    • 2

Dip a sponge into the solution and dab around the spalling brick. Perform this step on a dry, warm day and only if the spalling brick has excessive mold, algae or dirt. Allow the brick to dry completely.

    • 3

Dip a large brush into the penetrant sealant and paint an even coating of the sealant over the spalling brick surface. Allow it to dry completely. Apply a second coat over the first coat. The sealant will stop any new moisture from entering the brick from the outside, which will limit the amount of new spalling that can occur within the brick. The penetrant sealant variety also works its way inside of the brick to keep moisture damage from occurring within the brick. This type of sealant should be reapplied every five years.
