Method of Coating, Soldering & Waterproofing Concrete Foundation

Before the cold and wet winter months hit, it’s a good time to weatherize the foundation on your home. The foundation is one of the most important parts of the structure, being the very base that your house sits on. Take care to inspect your home's foundation regularly (at least once a year), and repair cracks and chips in it as well as waterproof it periodically. These measures of maintenance will keep your foundation looking good from year to year and will also ensure that it stays waterproof, which will help prevent damage from water and moisture.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden hose with high-pressure nozzle
  • Concrete solder or epoxy
  • 1 to 5 gallons concrete wet and dry patch (amount you need depends on how much area needs coating)
  • Trowel or putty knife
  • 5 to 10 gallons concrete waterproof tar emulsion (amount you need depends on the surface area you need to cover and waterproof)
  • Heavy knap roller or large, thick paint brush

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the entire surface of the foundation using the garden hose with the nozzle. Make sure to get all bits of dirt and loose concrete off the surface. Allow the foundation to dry before coating, soldering and waterproofing it.

    • 2

Apply the concrete patch to the chipped and cratered areas on the foundation using the trowel or putty knife. Fill the holes and smooth them out, making them even with the surface of the foundation, much like you would frost a cake.

    • 3

Fill in the larger cracks on your foundation using the concrete epoxy. Press the nozzle of the tube up against the top of the crack, and depress the trigger, shooting the solder into the crack and drawing the tube down along the crack as you go. Use the putty knife to smooth out any excess epoxy, and even it out with the surface of the foundation.

Apply the waterproofing product to the foundation with the roller or brush as if you were painting a wall. Start at one side of one wall of the foundation, and work your way around the house. Apply a heavy coat from the very top of the foundation, where it meets the house, down to the very bottom, where the footing meets the soil. Apply one or two coats, as directed by the manufacturer.
