How to Make False Balconies

Adding decorative elements to the outside of your home can enhance its visual appearance. A decorative element you can build for your home is a false balcony or balcony facade. This is a structure built to appear like a real balcony but it actually does not support weight. Materials for this project can be obtained at a local home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the window where you want to build the false balcony. Add five inches to this measurement.

    • 2

Locate the studs in the exterior wall with the stud finder. Attach a joist hanger to each stud with a nail gun, three to four inches below the bottom of the window.

    • 3

Measure a 2 by 6 board to six inches and cut the board with the circular saw. Cut an additional 2 by 6 board to this length for each joist hanger.

    • 4

Place one of the 2 by 6 boards into a joist hanger and secure with the nail gun. Repeat this step to attach the remaining 2 by 6 boards to each joist hanger.

    • 5

Measure and cut a 2 by 6 board to the width of the window. Place the board on the end of the 2 by 6 boards and secure with the nail gun.

    • 6

Measure and cut 2 by 4 boards to the width of the balcony. Secure the boards to the top of the balcony for the flooring. This is to provide a finished appearance for the balcony.

    • 7

Drill a hole through the floor at each corner of the balcony with the power drill. Set a railing post over each hole and secure with a carriage bolt. Tighten the carriage bolts by using the socket wrench.

    • 8

Make a mark 4 inches down from the top on the side of each railing post. Set the 2 by 2 inch railing in place on these marks between the railing posts and secure with screws.

    • 9

Measure the railing and make a mark every 4 inches. Set a baluster on each mark and align using the level. Secure the baluster to the railing and the side of the balcony with screws.

    • 10

Set the 2 by 4 inch railing cap on top of the railing. Secure the railing cap to the railing with screws.
