How to Change a Broken Vinyl Siding Corner

Vinyl siding has many advantages over wood. Its synthetic nature makes it impervious to water damage and the color resists fading. Vinyl can, however, crack or puncture, especially when struck. The corners of a house protrude, making them most vulnerable to damage due to hits. Replacing damaged corners with new corner trim means taking down all of the adjacent vinyl siding. Rather than replacing and having to remove a large amount of siding, simplify the corner repair by covering just the damaged trim instead.

Instructions

    • 1

Hammer down any lips around cracks or holes so they do not stick out.

    • 2

Cut a length of matching corner trim to match the length of the corner, using tin snips.

    • 3

Remove the nailing flanges from the sides of the new corner trim by scoring them with a sharp utility knife, then snapping them off.

    • 4

Sand the old trim and the underside of the new trim with coarse-grit sandpaper to lightly scuff the surfaces. Wipe away any sanding dust with a damp cloth or sponge.

    • 5

Apply construction adhesive to the underside of the new trim. Stick the new trim over the old trim. Tape the new trim down at several points along both edges with painter’s tape to hold the new trim in place until the construction adhesive dries. Quickly wipe away any adhesive that oozes out from under the new trim with a damp cloth or sponge.
