What Is an Easy Way to Close a Soffit?

A soffit is a piece of wood other material that is designed to close off open eaves under an extending roof. Closing these eaves is possible with a soffit and they are not difficult to install. Once you have the soffit installed, you can then further close off the eave with caulk or some other material to prevent liquids, bugs and other materials from getting inside the soffit and damaging it or the eave.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Screw the J channels to the underside of the outside edge of the eave facing the walls of the house.

    • 2

Measure a straight line from the J channels to the house wall. Screw the other set of J channels to the walls of the house. If necessary, use a concrete anchor to attach the channel to masonry or brick walls.

    • 3

Fit the soffit into the wall-side channel and the other side of the soffit into the eave side channel. Repeat the process for the entire length of wall.

    • 4

Screw H molding along each corner. Cut the edge of the soffit pieces that align with the corners at a 45-degree angle with the miter saw. Fit the angled soffit edges inside the H molding pieces.

    • 5

Line all soffit edges with a long bead of waterproof caulk. Allow the caulk to dry for 24 hours before allowing moisture to get on the soffits.
