How to Repair a Fiberglass Awning

Fiberglass awnings provide shade and keep out harmful ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. Over time, exposure to the weather elements on a continual basis causes the fiberglass awning to chip or crack. You can replace the awning, take it down or repair the fiberglass cracks. Though it may seem like a difficult task, patching fiberglass is not complicated and can be done by practically any adventurous homeowner.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety glasses, along with a dust mask, to protect your eyes and lungs. Fiberglass can fracture into tiny particles that are harmful to the eyes and lungs.

    • 2

Apply fiberglass epoxy resin to the cracks in the awning, using the resin applicator that was included with the fiberglass epoxy resin. Let the fiberglass epoxy resin dry and harden for about 5 hours.

    • 3

Sand the fiberglass awning with fine-grit dry sandpaper to remove any splinters, then sand the awning with fine-grit wet sandpaper to smooth. Wipe down and dry with a tack cloth.

    • 4

Apply a coat of gel coat sealer with a brush and allow to dry as long as suggested by the manufacturer.
