How to Remove Tiles From Concrete Walls

As a general rule, ceramic tile is used to cover interior walls and porcelain tile is used for exterior walls. Porcelain tiles contain quartz, making them considerably stronger than ceramic tiles. Often a damaged tile can be replaced without disturbing the surrounding tiles. Where numerous tiles are damaged, it may be a more efficient use of time to replace all of the tiles. Removing tiles from a concrete wall is a fairly straightforward task, but removing the underlying mortar can be time-consuming and laborious.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the majority of the grout that surrounds any one tile piece by holding a cold chisel at a slight angle to the grout and tapping the chisel with a hammer.

    • 2

Tap the center of the tile piece from which the grout was removed with the hammer to crack the tile.

    • 3

Position the chisel against a tile crack at a 45 degree angle, then tap the chisel with the hammer to break apart that piece.

    • 4

Position the chisel against the bottom edge of any adjoining tile and strike the chisel with the hammer to break that piece away from the wall. Repeat this step for the remaining tiles.

    • 5

Chisel away the underlying mortar after removing all of the tiles.
