How to Fix Frieze-Board Problems

A frieze board is a piece of trim board added over soffits and wall siding to give the wall or soffit a finished appearance. A smaller molding piece is often added over a frieze board to add an additional decorative look. Frieze boards are used along windows, the top of walls and near roofs, depending on the home. Some homes do not use frieze boards at all. The most common problem that occurs with a frieze board is separation from the wall and warping due to water absorption.

Instructions

  1. Separation

    • 1

Inspect the gap between the frieze board and the soffit. If the gap is larger than 1 inch, fill in the gap with a new piece of frieze board. If it is smaller, use caulk to fill in the gap.

    • 2

Cut a piece of frieze board to fit inside the gaped area. Nail the board in place. Paint over the board with matching paint.

    • 3

Fill in small gaps with waterproof caulk. Apply the caulk on a sunny day. Let the caulk dry for 24 hours before allowing moisture to touch the caulk.

    Warping

    • 4

Pry the warped frieze board away from the wall with a small pry bar.

    • 5

Cut a new piece of frieze board the same size as the warped piece.

    • 6

Nail the new piece over the soffit where you removed the first piece.

    • 7

Paint over the frieze board matching it to the rest of the frieze trim and house siding.
