How to Change the Bulb on an Overhead Door Opener

Automatic garage door openers use timed lighting systems that energize when the door opens. The overhead door light operates independently of any other switched lighting the garage may have. It provides illumination for a preset amount of time, which is usually sufficient for exiting your vehicle or reaching a light switch. When the light bulb used in the overhead door opener fails, it can be replaced with another bulb of the correct wattage as recommended by the manufacturer. You can change the bulb with the proper tools and basic, do-it yourself skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electrical power to the garage opener.

    • 2

Place a stepladder beneath the light lens.

    • 3

Locate the two locking tabs that connect the lens cover to the frame of the door opener. Some models have two screws to secure the lens in addition to locking tabs.

    • 4

Remove the two lens retaining screws, if applicable, using a Phillips screwdriver. Turn the screws counterclockwise.

    • 5

Depress the two locking tabs simultaneously. This will allow the lens to swing open, pivoting on its hinge pins.

    • 6

Remove the failed light bulb from its socket. Turn the bulb counterclockwise by hand.

    • 7

Install a new rough service light bulb of the approved wattage into the light socket. Tighten the bulb clockwise until it's snug.

    • 8

Raise the lens cover and snap it into place.

    • 9

Install the two retaining screws, if applicable. Tighten the screws clockwise.

    • 10

      Restore electrical power.
