How to Replace Wooden Fascia

Wooden fascia is a finishing material that is fastened around the top of a home, directly under the roof's shingles or tiles. In some cases, it may be covered up by gutters. Fascia is the "face" of the soffit, the horizontal wood or eaves on the outside of the house. With consistent exposure to the weather, wooden fascia will begin to rot. Once the fascia begins to rot, water can leak inside the soffit, causing damage to the soffit.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ladder near the damaged wooden fascia.

    • 2

Remove the gutters covering the fascia, if applicable, using a screw gun or impact wrench.

    • 3

Pry the old wooden fascia away from the roof, using a pry bar. Pry off any nails that remain in the roof as well.

    • 4

Measure the length of the area, using a tape measure, then measure and mark the new lumber with the tape measure and a pencil to cut it to size.

    • 5

Put on safety glasses, and cut the new lumber with a circular saw.

    • 6

Apply a coat of wood sealer to the new wooden fascia, using a paintbrush, and let it dry.

    • 7

Fasten the replacement fascia to the roof, using a hammer and nails, and then reinstall the gutters, if applicable.
